Space. The Final Frontier. Only that might not really be the best description of space in this canon, they seem to have a pretty crisp understanding of space.

Alright, so, we've got lots of things taking place on different planets as well as ships, technologies, and terminology, so here shall be a basic rundown of things in canon relevant to Toombs and his experiences. There are probably other things, but when you have a canon with a limited scope, well, The U.S.S. Make Shit Up.

Ships. We've got the Flattery C-19 Short Range Skiff, a model of ship that Toombs has both on UV-6 and when he comes for Riddick again later off to Crematoria. It could even possibly be the same ship, but either way, this is either the merc ship of choice or it's simply Toombs' ship throughout the whole ordeal. As it says, it's short range so it can't handle long runs out in space, possibly because of a combination of fuel and engine power. It is a pretty reliable ship though.

Then you have the "plantation operation" merc ships like the Kublai Khan, which collects a bunch of mercs, goes out for years at a time, collects bounties, and then trades out meat the next time it makes port. The cargo, be it mercs or bounties, is usually stored in cryosleep until needed.

Cryosleep is this this fancy thing involving either, in the case of Kublai Khan (and possibly the crew in , being stored in tubes until woken up, or in all other instances involving being hooked up to a complicated machine that injects a special solution into the bloodstream. This shuts down the brain and makes it so the body doesn't require food, water, or anything else to survive during cryosleep and makes the time of space travel seem less.

Slams are prisons of different securities throughout the system. There are three no-daylight maximum security slams left in the system. Crematoria is one of them. There are so few left because, in the novelization, Riddick says that "civilized" people didn't want something like that "in their backyard." Maybe it was the risk of if an inmate broke out, maybe it's disgust for the inhumanity of the slams. In Crematoria Slam Facility, we see that there is a low regard to the lives of the prisoners, that they are pitted against each other and against hell hounds to survive. The environment, due to the planet the slam is on, is awful, and I suppose is supposed to be the closest representation of hell as far as it goes.

Systems are what I assume just solar systems, though it seems that between the undefined passage of time, and "shitty" quality of Toombs' undercutter, that most systems are not as great a distance from one another as say, our solar system and the nearest one. UV-6, of the UV system, is a planet with an tundra-like environment, always cold, with no human or humanoid life established there, predominantly a chain of different predators that prey on each other. Crematoria, of the Ingeon System, has the opposite kind of environment to UV-6, somewhat. The surface is so hot on the sun side that the terrain is burnt and cragged, where on the night side it is, I believe, 3000 degrees below zero and I assume this is at Fahrenheit. Completely uninhabitable on the surface, causing for any life to survive below the surface in the man-made tunnels, hangars, and control room, where they move to the surface and swap air. Helion Prime is a thriving planet that is mostly sand dunes and ocean. It is a home to many people of many creeds, and collects sunlight to power the rest of the planets in the Helion system.

History:
Very little is known about Toombs' past. Very little, he is given absolutely no backstory. To supplement though, we have from the novel a brief zinger directed at Toombs.
Toombs nodded as if he had expected to hear something just like Riddick’s retort. “Real predictable, you know that? You know what I’m thinkin’ now?”
“That if your mother had known your father you’d be raising fruit on Bannkul IV?”
A muscle twitched in the mercenary’s cheek, but otherwise he showed no reaction.

This at least implies that, from his controlled response, there's truth to what Riddick said, so we can probably figure that yeah, he was raised by a single mother. I don't see it as a super great childhood or anything because look how he turned out, mes amis. Onto the events in his life that we do have definite confirmation of.

The events in Dark Fury are brief, but they are the first chronological introduction of Toombs as a character. The guard makes a comment about him which illustrates that Toombs is probably a troublemaker, at least for the people that run the Kublai Khan. Whatever it is he did is probably outweighed by his skill and ability to survive, as it's said that "it must be something big, them taking [him] off ice..," the something big being Riddick's arrival on the ship. Toombs gears up and heads off to something resembling the bridge perhaps, possibly some other room on the ship, and hops into a fancy chair with a futuristic virtual boy sort of thing where you can look up information across the space internet or something. I'm not going to even question what sort of science goes into that. In any case, he gets some intel on Riddick being the head they are hunting, and then joins up with the rest of the motley crew of mercs that have been pulled together to make sure that Riddick doesn't get off the ship.

Of course, things go pretty south, the rest of the mercs get eaten, Toombs, being a cockroach, manages to slip off to safety while some other people die as well as the two people who run the ship, Madame Chillingsworth and her assistant Junner. Toombs stares off into space after the ship that Riddick, Imam, and Jack escape on, swearing that their tango ain't done just yet.

Because it ain't. They share a few more dances together before the end of their journey together.

Their next rodeo is on UV-6, where Imam and Aereon place a bounty for Riddick alive, highest bounty on the market. Being a man who likes to make his exploits worth his time, naturally, he vies for the highest price on the market. Who should he care if he's going private party or to a slam? It's not his problem as long as he gets paid. So, he makes the run out to UV-6 with a four-man crew. For most single-convict runs, this might be enough. For Riddick? Not nearly. Riddick takes out every single one except for Toombs, leaving him behind on the planet as he spirits away to find out why the hell a private party from the same planet he dropped Imam at would put a price on his head.

It's unexplained how Toombs gets off UV-6, and perhaps the mystery makes his return later all the more hilarious, but it's clear he's been around the merc circles, has enough experience under his belt that he usually takes the leader position when we see him in a group. The next time we see him is on Helium Prime after Riddick has banged the place around quite a big, really fucked with the Necromongers. Of course, as Riddick tries to make his escape off world, Toombs shows up with a five-man crew of mercs (a clever retort to a comment Riddick makes on UV-6) and a rocket launcher, essentially offering him an escape off-world even if they didn't know it.

Toombs and his crew slap the cuffs on Riddick and they make off-world. There's a little talk of which slam to take him to before eventually landing on Crematoria, falling right in line with Riddick's plans exactly. They get there, strap Riddick in for transport, one of the mercs sitting on him on this tiny little cargo sled. Riddick pretty much pelvic thrusts the merc off him and into one of the lights overhead in the tunnel the cargo sled travels on. Toombs just looks back, laughs, and carries on like it's not a big deal. Means less people to split the bounty between. Great news!

Riddick gets delivered down below to the prisoner section of the slam, while Toombs negotiates the rate for Riddick that they are gonna get, because unfortunately, this wasn't paying so nice as the private party offer he lost out on. He gives a one-day ultimatum to the warden and they hop off to rest for the night after traveling.

Toombs and his crew return later to the main office of the slam. Unforunately, the warden Douruba takes his Necromongers very seriously so when it becomes clear that the Necromongers are after Riddick, there's a firefight between the mercs and the slam staff, with all the mercs going down except, once again, Toombs, who escapes down a hole and catches himself on a hanging chain. Riddick seizes the opportunity, makes a jump for the chain and grabs onto Toombs.

It was there they shared a moment. Toombs (in the novelization that offers more insight to his internal monologue) hides a fear for his life where Riddick could easily end him behind a disgruntled growl, especially when Riddick climbs up the chain swiftly, using Toombs head as footing. This moment is probably the most demeaning moment of the mercenary's life. So far. Almost.

Some of the other prisoners follow Riddick up into the main office, though not up the chain. They take a staircase instead, as not everyone has the great upper body strength Riddick has. Riddick explains what happened up there to the prisoners, Toombs climbs into the room like up like "How the fuck do you know that? You weren't even here!" This moment, like most moments, gives Riddick an opening to come off like some badass genius, says something along the lines of "because it was my plan. /cool grin"

This is where Toombs has that most demeaning moment: he gets locked in a cage between a couple of hellhounds. And end history, enter canon point.

Personality:
he's an ass, i think that's all you need to know

No, I'm just playin'. Let's get to the deets. The answer is he has too much swagger, clearly. No, there's more than that, sorry. Well, he does have a swagger about him, an air of confidence, definitely. He gives off the air of a leader in most cases, in control of a situation, unless his temper is getting the better of him of course. He's talkative and comes across as having a lot of personality compared to some others in his trade. Most are more aloof and calculating in their hunt, others are like dogs sniffing out a meal, and Toombs somehow sits comfortably in the middle-- and it works. While visibly being driven by his end goal of the payday, at the same time he maintains awareness of his surroundings as well as those who are in them, and is quick to think and react in accordance to the scenario around him. He truly strikes a balance, adaptive to most situations presented to him, and this could possibly even apply to social situations. Most social situations involving Toombs are in his native setting: mercs, convicts, slam workers-- and the environment and people of the Tranquility will challenge him to have a more careful approach with the people than his usual gendered comments that some would probably consider offensive. Though he will probably still offend a few people, perhaps many.

Above all else, Toombs' main motivator is surviving. He is the personification of cockroach, slipping his way out of dangerous situations that often claim the lives of those around him. It's a grim career, and in the middle of it all he squeezes out of it, usually. Everyone goes out sometime. Still, while he dies in that deleted scene, he still manages to get himself out of a cage that he didn't have the key to, meaning he was crafty and/or came prepared for such a scenario. He recognizes anything that is an immediate threat to his own life and while he doesn't like having his power challenged by others, he does know when to save his own hide and run away from a fight. It's not cowardice so much as knowing when and how to pick his fights, and he doesn't exactly have a death wish.

In the face of death that occurs regularly to those around him, Toombs remains optimistic, unusually so perhaps as when one member of his crew dies, he simply thinks of how each remaining member will get a bigger cut. Perhaps this is because he has faith and confidence in his ability to squeeze out alive. Obviously he has a lower regard for human life, considering he hunts heads for money, but he knows that his job is dangerous, and therefore, so should those around him. Some criminals are small time, but others know their way around a weapon and how to kill. This could even be linked to narcissism, so positive because he's proud that he sees himself coming out of each hunt on top and paid well for his work. If the price isn't right, he knows what to say and what buttons to push to get a paycheck that's worth his while. His cockiness brings him the ease to crack jokes and wear his shit eating grin.

While this trait is not expressed in the Chronicles of Riddick film, it is expressed in both the novelization and Dark Fury: Toombs' curiosity. When going into something, he likes to be in top form, and that means knowing your surroundings as well as those in them or the head you are hunting. Some mercs are like soldiers, following like a dog on a leash, taking orders without asking the questions. Toombs doesn't necessarily ask questions so much as he watches, observes. Certainly no Sherlock, by far, but he still has a keen eye. Questions are in the natural order of seeking answers though, and he likes to also come across like he knows what he's talking about, so he's more likely to seek information from methods that don't involve asking others.

Though in the movie Toombs can read more like sleazy and less like charming, the novelization expands on this in the narrative, saying "He possessed a certain vicious charm that constituted something of an attractant to the ladies and allowed him to get into places and away with things that defeated less animated types like Codd and Johns." This would fall in line more with his pomp, as being able to not only talk your way around women, but also around enforcement or authority figures and knowing that you can do it would be quite the stroke to any ego. Toombs has no shortage of ego. Not a bit. This would also supplement his adaptive quality when it comes to different social situations. Also, as harsh as his line of work has made him, his momma probably taught him to have manners, though he saves those for special occasions.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
GUNS ➤ He's a mercenary shown to have experience with a futuristic style of pistol as well as implied knowledge of how to work a Gatling gun, and there's probably more experience where that came from. Given some time with whatever models available on the Tranquility and he would probably adapt to them fine.
PROBLEM SOLVING ➤ He's a cockroach. He loves knowing how things work for the sake of "it might be important later." While not a superpower or anything, he has it down to a science enough that he can slip out of a tight space, though maybe at the expense of others around him.
TEMPER ➤ While not kryptonite, his temper could still get him into trouble if he doesn't keep a lid on it.

Inventory:
➤ his pack of cigarettes, hand-rolled, and lighter
➤ his black vest that has a million pockets
➤ maybe a small picture of his mom, I'm still on the fence about that

Appearance:

Toombs appears to be a white human man, tanned, with dark hair. He has a scar at the outer corner of his right eye that resembles a gelatin special effects appliance, giving it the appearance that the scar is probably the result of a chemical burn. It is well integrated into the rest of the skin on his face, implying that the scar is probably something he got as a young merc, possibly reckless. For someone with some gray in their facial hair, he still keeps in very good physical form.
Age: His actor was 43, that sounds good to me as it's not confirmed ever.

Heads always liked to make comments, fling insults to try and catch you off-guard, get the upper hand. Most of the time, it was just cute how they thought they could get under his skin, but Riddick was big game, and it was both startling and frustrating that he could. But he could puff his chest and squawk right back, though his prisoner was so calm in the midst of all this. Probably why it was so frustrating.

Exactly why it was so frustrating. This game was too dangerous not to deal in absolutes.

After their exchange, Toombs refrained from engaging him further, redirecting his attention to his crew. There was that fat idiot who, while having enough experience to merit hiring for the ride, was really only good for a laugh, and he would probably die before this whole thing was through. The pilot and co-pilot? Definitely more reliable, and well, the co-pilot certainly wasn't bad on the eyes, was she? Though she was definitely the kind of girl that would scoff and walk away if he made a move. Never play your hand with a merc girl, you'll merely give them a laugh or get shot in the foot. Sometimes other places, if you were that dumb.

Every so often, he'd cast a sidelong glance to those goggles wrapped around that bald head and he couldn't help but sneer before returning his attention elsewhere. Had to make some wise-ass remark about his mother . . .

His mind usually goes straight to the dirty stuff under cryo, that or really good hunts he liked to look back on. The thrill or the pride he felt. Instead, he's spirited away to some far away memories of when he was a youth on some backwater planet with his mother. Times where he was too young to understand why men like who he was today would come almost beating down her door, stay for a few hours and leave. Times where he was old enough that he tried to kick their asses and ended up getting his own kicked instead. Of course, he was one of those guys now, but he certainly showed more respect than they ever did. He liked to think so anyway.

Thoughts slip away, back to the usual cryo dreams. Even his subconscious knew it was time to move on from all that. Still on a job, still have work to do. He wouldn't be deterred by something so small.

Comms Sample:
[Toombs has spent a great deal of time tapping around his comm before trying to execute any sort of communique out to the masses. This whole situation was a number of words he could use to describe it, though none were ever quite the one he was looking for, and in any case, he would do what he always did (or supposed he did, it was still pretty foggy): learn and get by.

There's one thing he's missing here though that could be important later: connections, social ones. People who know their way around things or have access to something he might need. He fiddles around, probably has a couple of misfired videos before he finally records the one he uploads.]

Now, as much as I don't mind shoving things down my throat, waking up with something rammed down it? Well, it certainly blows. [hahahaha. there's a saying somewhere about people who laugh at their own jokes, but like he cares.]

Cutting to the chase. This place doesn't exactly come with a pamphlet for honeymooners. Maybe I don't have the touch but I've only been able to work so much on this thing. Fresh arrival but if you lend a hand, I'll make it worth your while. Sure we can work something out.

[Yes, offer assistance to the guy who made a blow job joke. Offer it. He gives a final crooked grin before the video ends.]
